Is your child experiencing too many sick days lately? Most of the time, kids are exposed to various germs and viruses when they are at school. Their immune system is tested to its limits. So as a parent or guardian, what can you do to help your child stay healthy and sick free? Reminding your child all the time of the following health basics can get him a long way:
• Frequent and proper hand washing
Tell your child to wash his hands with soap before and after eating, after using the toilet, after playing and after blowing his nose if he has colds. When he washes his hands frequently, not only does he protect himself from viruses, he also stops the spread of it to others.
• Use hand sanitizer
Give your kid a small bottle of hand sanitizer that he can use when he’s not able to wash his hands. He should keep it handy at all times.
• Covering the mouth when coughing, nose when sneezing
This is another basic thing that your child can do to prevent the spread of viruses. Always give him a pack of tissue or a handkerchief. He can use this to cover his mouth while coughing. As for the tissue, he should throw it in the bin after using and then wash his hands.
• No sharing of water bottles or any personal items
Teach your child the importance of taking care of his health and his personal items. Tell him to resist the urge to share his water bottle, comb, handkerchief or any personal belonging to a classmate.
• Have your child immunized and vaccinated.
Discuss the immunization plan to your child’s paediatrician. It’s good if you can stick to that plan so that your child builds very strong resistance to common diseases. It’s also wise to ask the doctor about the flu vaccine which is given every 6 months.
• Maintain a healthy diet.
Let the whole family eat a balanced and healthy diet of meat, fruits and vegetables. If your child can’t stay away from junk foods, minimize the consumption of those. Also, instruct your child to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day to keep him hydrated.
• Pack nutritious food and snacks in the lunch box.
It has always been a challenge especially for moms to pack her child’s lunch box. Make sure that your child still maintains a healthy diet even at school. Scrap the junk food. Pack healthy lunches that don’t have a lot of preservatives or harmful ingredients in it.
• Take vitamins and supplements.
This can also be discussed with your family doctor. There are a lot of vitamins and supplements out there. Make sure that you’re giving the right one for your child’s growth and immune system.
• Have a good night sleep.
Our bodies are able to relax and repair after a day’s work from a good night sleep. Make sure that your child is not distracted before sleep and that he gets 8 to 10 hours a day of quality snooze.
These health tips may not guarantee a hundred percent illness proof but they work. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a cure. Therefore, always remind your child to look after himself to stay healthy and absent-free from school.
